When should block paving be re-sanded?
Why the joints matter, when fresh sand is useful and why the surface needs time to dry.
The sand between block paving is functional, not decorative. Cleaning can displace tired or loose jointing material, so re-sanding is often an important finishing step.
What the sand does
Jointing sand helps interlock the blocks and supports the surface. If joints are visibly depleted after an appropriate clean, fresh kiln-dried sand may be recommended.
Timing matters
The blocks and joints need to be sufficiently dry before new sand is installed. Weather, shade and drainage all affect when that point is reached.
Not every surface is the same
Existing condition, movement, drainage and previous sealing all matter. Re-sanding improves suitable joints; it does not repair a failed base or damaged paving.
ONE MORE THING
Does every block-paving clean include re-sanding?
Not automatically. We assess the joints and include or recommend it where appropriate.
